Psalm 49

1 Hear this, all peoples!     Give ear, all inhabitants of the world, 2 both low and high,     rich and poor together! 3 My mouth shall speak wisdom;     the meditation of my heart shall be understanding. 4 I will incline my ear to a proverb;     I will solve my riddle to the music of the lyre. 5 Why should I fear in times of trouble,     when the iniquity of those who cheat me surrounds me, 6 those who trust in their wealth     and boast of the abundance of their riches? 7 Truly no man can ransom another,     or give to God the price of his life, 8 for the ransom of their life is costly     and can never suffice, 9 that he should live on forever     and never see the pit. 10 For he sees that even the wise die;     the fool and the stupid alike must perish     and leave their wealth to others. 11 Their graves are their homes forever,     their dwelling places to all generations,     though they called lands by their own names. 12 Man in his pomp will not remain;     he is like the beasts that perish. 13 This is the path of those who have foolish confidence;     yet after them people approve of their boasts. Selah 14 Like sheep they are appointed for Sheol;     death shall be their shepherd,     and the upright shall rule over them in the morning.     Their form shall be consumed in Sheol, with no place to dwell. 15 But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol,     for he will receive me. Selah 16 Be not afraid when a man becomes rich,     when the glory of his house increases. 17 For when he dies he will carry nothing away;     his glory will not go down after him. 18 For though, while he lives, he counts himself blessed     —and though you get praise when you do well for yourself— 19 his soul will go to the generation of his fathers,     who will never again see light. 20 Man in his pomp yet without understanding is like the beasts that perish.

Psalm 53

1 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”     They are corrupt, doing abominable iniquity;     there is none who does good. 2 God looks down from heaven     on the children of man     to see if there are any who understand,     who seek after God. 3 They have all fallen away;     together they have become corrupt;     there is none who does good,     not even one. 4 Have those who work evil no knowledge,     who eat up my people as they eat bread,     and do not call upon God? 5 There they are, in great terror,     where there is no terror!     For God scatters the bones of him who encamps against you;     you put them to shame, for God has rejected them. 6 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!     When God restores the fortunes of his people,     let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.

Psalm 119:49-72

49 Remember your word to your servant,     in which you have made me hope. 50 This is my comfort in my affliction,     that your promise gives me life. 51 The insolent utterly deride me,     but I do not turn away from your law. 52 When I think of your rules from of old,     I take comfort, O Lord. 53 Hot indignation seizes me because of the wicked,     who forsake your law. 54 Your statutes have been my songs     in the house of my sojourning. 55 I remember your name in the night, O Lord,     and keep your law. 56 This blessing has fallen to me,     that I have kept your precepts. 57 The Lord is my portion;     I promise to keep your words. 58 I entreat your favor with all my heart;     be gracious to me according to your promise. 59 When I think on my ways,     I turn my feet to your testimonies; 60 I hasten and do not delay     to keep your commandments. 61 Though the cords of the wicked ensnare me,     I do not forget your law. 62 At midnight I rise to praise you,     because of your righteous rules. 63 I am a companion of all who fear you,     of those who keep your precepts. 64 The earth, O Lord, is full of your steadfast love;     teach me your statutes! 65 You have dealt well with your servant,     Lord, according to your word. 66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge,     for I believe in your commandments. 67 Before I was afflicted I went astray,     but now I keep your word. 68 You are good and do good;     teach me your statutes. 69 The insolent smear me with lies,     but with my whole heart I keep your precepts; 70 their heart is unfeeling like fat,     but I delight in your law. 71 It is good for me that I was afflicted,     that I might learn your statutes. 72 The law of your mouth is better to me     than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

1 Samuel 25:23-44

23 When Abigail saw David, she hurried and got down from the donkey and fell before David on her face and bowed to the ground. 24 She fell at his feet and said, “On me alone, my lord, be the guilt. Please let your servant speak in your ears, and hear the words of your servant. 25 Let not my lord regard this worthless fellow, Nabal, for as his name is, so is he. Nabal is his name, and folly is with him. But I your servant did not see the young men of my lord, whom you sent. 26 Now then, my lord, as the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, because the Lord has restrained you from bloodguilt and from saving with your own hand, now then let your enemies and those who seek to do evil to my lord be as Nabal. 27 And now let this present that your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow my lord. 28 Please forgive the trespass of your servant. For the Lord will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord is fighting the battles of the Lord, and evil shall not be found in you so long as you live. 29 If men rise up to pursue you and to seek your life, the life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living in the care of the Lord your God. And the lives of your enemies he shall sling out as from the hollow of a sling. 30 And when the Lord has done to my lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning you and has appointed you prince over Israel, 31 my lord shall have no cause of grief or pangs of conscience for having shed blood without cause or for my lord working salvation himself. And when the Lord has dealt well with my lord, then remember your servant.” 32 And David said to Abigail, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me! 33 Blessed be your discretion, and blessed be you, who have kept me this day from bloodguilt and from working salvation with my own hand! 34 For as surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, who has restrained me from hurting you, unless you had hurried and come to meet me, truly by morning there had not been left to Nabal so much as one male.” 35 Then David received from her hand what she had brought him. And he said to her, “Go up in peace to your house. See, I have obeyed your voice, and I have granted your petition.” 36 And Abigail came to Nabal, and behold, he was holding a feast in his house, like the feast of a king. And Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk. So she told him nothing at all until the morning light. 37 In the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. 38 And about ten days later the Lord struck Nabal, and he died. 39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, “Blessed be the Lord who has avenged the insult I received at the hand of Nabal, and has kept back his servant from wrongdoing. The Lord has returned the evil of Nabal on his own head.” Then David sent and spoke to Abigail, to take her as his wife. 40 When the servants of David came to Abigail at Carmel, they said to her, “David has sent us to you to take you to him as his wife.” 41 And she rose and bowed with her face to the ground and said, “Behold, your handmaid is a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.” 42 And Abigail hurried and rose and mounted a donkey, and her five young women attended her. She followed the messengers of David and became his wife. 43 David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel, and both of them became his wives. 44 Saul had given Michal his daughter, David's wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was of Gallim.

Acts 14:19-28

1But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and having persuaded the crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead. 20 But when the disciples gathered about him, he rose up and entered the city, and on the next day he went on with Barnabas to Derbe. 21 When they had preached the gospel to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch, 22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God. 23 And when they had appointed elders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed. 24 Then they passed through Pisidia and came to Pamphylia. 25 And when they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia, 26 and from there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work that they had fulfilled. 27 And when they arrived and gathered the church together, they declared all that God had done with them, and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles. 28 And they remained no little time with the disciples.

Mark 4:35-41

35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
