Today's readings include passages from Psalm, Deuteronomy, 2 Corinthians and Luke.

Psalm 9

1 I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart;     I will recount all of your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and exult in you;     I will sing praise to your name, O Most High. When my enemies turn back,     they stumble and perish before your presence. For you have maintained my just cause;     you have sat on the throne, giving righteous judgment. You have rebuked the nations; you have made the wicked perish;     you have blotted out their name forever and ever. The enemy came to an end in everlasting ruins;     their cities you rooted out;     the very memory of them has perished. But the Lord sits enthroned forever;     he has established his throne for justice, and he judges the world with righteousness;     he judges the peoples with uprightness. The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed,     a stronghold in times of trouble. 10 And those who know your name put their trust in you,     for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you. 11 Sing praises to the Lord, who sits enthroned in Zion!     Tell among the peoples his deeds! 12 For he who avenges blood is mindful of them;     he does not forget the cry of the afflicted. 13 Be gracious to me, O Lord!     See my affliction from those who hate me,     O you who lift me up from the gates of death, 14 that I may recount all your praises,     that in the gates of the daughter of Zion     I may rejoice in your salvation. 15 The nations have sunk in the pit that they made;     in the net that they hid, their own foot has been caught. 16 The Lord has made himself known; he has executed judgment;     the wicked are snared in the work of their own hands. 17 The wicked shall return to Sheol,     all the nations that forget God. 18 For the needy shall not always be forgotten,     and the hope of the poor shall not perish forever. 19 Arise, O Lord! Let not man prevail;     let the nations be judged before you! 20 Put them in fear, O Lord!     Let the nations know that they are but men!

Psalm 15

1 O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent?     Who shall dwell on your holy hill? He who walks blamelessly and does what is right     and speaks truth in his heart; who does not slander with his tongue     and does no evil to his neighbor,     nor takes up a reproach against his friend; in whose eyes a vile person is despised,     but who honors those who fear the Lord;     who swears to his own hurt and does not change; who does not put out his money at interest     and does not take a bribe against the innocent.     He who does these things shall never be moved.

Psalm 25

1 To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. O my God, in you I trust;     let me not be put to shame;     let not my enemies exult over me. Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame;     they shall be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous. Make me to know your ways, O Lord;     teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me,     for you are the God of my salvation;     for you I wait all the day long. Remember your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love,     for they have been from of old. Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions;     according to your steadfast love remember me,     for the sake of your goodness, O Lord! Good and upright is the Lord;     therefore he instructs sinners in the way. He leads the humble in what is right,     and teaches the humble his way. 10 All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness,     for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies. 11 For your name's sake, O Lord,     pardon my guilt, for it is great. 12 Who is the man who fears the Lord?     Him will he instruct in the way that he should choose. 13 His soul shall abide in well-being,     and his offspring shall inherit the land. 14 The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him,     and he makes known to them his covenant. 15 My eyes are ever toward the Lord,     for he will pluck my feet out of the net. 16 Turn to me and be gracious to me,     for I am lonely and afflicted. 17 The troubles of my heart are enlarged;     bring me out of my distresses. 18 Consider my affliction and my trouble,     and forgive all my sins. 19 Consider how many are my foes,     and with what violent hatred they hate me. 20 Oh, guard my soul, and deliver me!     Let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in you. 21 May integrity and uprightness preserve me,     for I wait for you. 22 Redeem Israel, O God,     out of all his troubles.

Deuteronomy 4:9-14

“Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children's children— 10 how on the day that you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, the Lord said to me, ‘Gather the people to me, that I may let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children so.’ 11 And you came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, while the mountain burned with fire to the heart of heaven, wrapped in darkness, cloud, and gloom. 12 Then the Lord spoke to you out of the midst of the fire. You heard the sound of words, but saw no form; there was only a voice. 13 And he declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, that is, the Ten Commandments, and he wrote them on two tablets of stone. 14 And the Lord commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and rules, that you might do them in the land that you are going over to possess.

2 Corinthians 1:1-11

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, to the church of God that is at Corinth, with all the saints who are in the whole of Achaia: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.For as we share abundantly in Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too. If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer. Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort. For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. 10 He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again. 11 You also must help us by prayer, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the prayers of many.

Luke 14:25-35

25 Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. 28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ 31 Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.33 So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple. 34 “Salt is good, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? 35 It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
